Evaluation of Antioxidant and Nephroprotective Effects of Desert Medicinal Plants from Southern Iraq

Abstract
Background: The research examined four desert plants, which included Artemisia monosperma, wild thyme, Achillea falcata, and Ephedra, which were collected from the Al-Salman desert area in Al-Muthanna Province, Iraq. The study assessed the methanolic and aqueous extracts to determine their extraction capacity while studying their chemical characteristics and their effects on kidney failure and inflammation biomarkers. Methods: The preparation of methanolic and aqueous extracts to study their extraction efficiency and chemical properties, as well as their impact on kidney failure and inflammation biomarkers. Results: The research showed that different solvents produced different extraction yields because aqueous extracts had higher recovery rates than methanolic extracts. The tested plants showed that Artemisia monosperma produced the highest biological activity. The aqueous extract treatment at 300 μg/mL produced significant serum urea reduction from 119.6 to 52.50 mg/dL and serum creatinine reduction from 6.69 to 5.42 mg/dL in kidney failure patients samples. Moreover, C-reactive protein levels decreased from 94.95 to 57.51 mg/dL, which demonstrated a strong anti-inflammatory effect. The observed biological activities exist because the plants contain high levels of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, which protect against oxidative stress and inflammation. Conclusion: The research results indicate that Artemisia monosperma and other desert plants show strong nephroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, which make them suitable natural treatments for decreasing oxidative stress and enhancing renal-related biochemical parameters.
